“Conducted by Boon Hua Lien, Bajzer’s 2011 “Zrikavac” (“The Cricket”) for countertenor and string octet was a beauty. Beginning with soft, high upper strings, it follows a man through a sleepless night as he listens to the failing voice of a dying cricket. Jurenas (remember the name) sang this plaintive setting of Croatian poet Vladimir Nazor’s verses with heart-stopping beauty (somehow, reminding this listener of the mezzo-soprano lament “Field of the Dead” from Prokofiev’s cantata “Alexander Nevsky”).”
